10/28/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Gus’s previous owner states that he lived with two adults and two children. He was relaxed around children, but would give warnings and pat them with his paws when they did something he didn’t like. His warnings never broke skin. He also lived with another male cat and they were playful and affectionate towards each other. They can sometimes play rough. He has a low activity level and was described as mellow and assertive. He likes to be petted, but doesn’t like to be picked up and held. He usually follows the owner around the home. Reaction to assessor: Gus was calm, relaxed, and friendly by the front. Reaction when softly spoken to: Gus meows and rubs all over the cage door. Reaction to cage door opening: Gus remains soft and relaxed. Reaction to touch: Gus head-butts, leans on the assessor, and starts to purr. He may get agitated at times and he meows and pats the assessor’s hand multiple times without nails. His tail starts to sway from side to side, but he will solicit attention again after a moment. Reaction to being picked up: Gus allows handling and remains soft, but he whines and pats the assessor’s hand gently multiple times when he was put back down. Once settled, he head-butts again and rubs against the assessor. Behavior Determination: Experience Gus is social and affectionate but appears to be easily overstimulated. As a result of this observed behavior we recommend adopters who are familiar with signs of behavioral arousal and agitation in cats, so that interactions can be ended before Gus becomes overstimulated. We also recommend fishing pole-type toys for play as they allow for interaction and vigorous, stimulating exercise while keeping human hands at a distance. Due to how gentle he was with his warnings, we are basing the determination based on the previous owner’s information; however we recommend any future home with children conduct a thorough interaction before adopting.
