He has lived with a 10 year old child, as well as another cat. He played and was relaxed with the child, and they were very close. He was a pleasure to interact with, a complete sweetheart. I am a neutered male black and white domestic sh mix. The shelter thinks I am about 4 YEARS old.
I came in the shelter as a OWNER SUR on 11/04/2015 from NY 10029, owner surrender reason stated was INAD FACIL. I came in with Group/Litter #K15-038354.

11/05/15 12:36hrs Dexter is a neutered domestic shorthair cat that was cared for by his owner for the past three years. Dexter lived alongside another male cat in the home, Banana (A1056905) but they have been surrendered because their owner could not keep them at the owner’s new residence. SOCIAL LIFE & PERSOANLITY Dexter is described as curious, outgoing and affectionate. He lived in a home with a 10 year old child and was relaxed with the child. He also interacted with a pit-bull in the owner’s home but would hiss at the dog when it was near. Dexter was relaxed with Banana. They would play together and sometimes groom each other. BEHAVIOR Dexter is accustomed to grooming his self. He will hiss at his owner if his owner attempts to brush him. He doesn’t mind being held sometimes. When he wants attention he will approach his owner to get his head rubbed. He is curious when there are visitors in the home. He will approach them and attempt sniff them. FOR A NEW FAMILY TO KNOW Dexter is accustomed to sharing a hooded litter box filled with clumping litter. He enjoys playing with stuffed toys and catnip filled items. He would scratch his owner’s upholstered chair. He was provided a twine covered scratching tree but he wouldn’t use it. Dexter is accustomed to eating wet and dry cat food. DURING INTAKE During intake allowed all handling without aggression. When scanned was negative for a microchip and when touched had stiff body at first but then began to relax and has soft, neutral body. When outside carrier would attempt to flee but did not hiss, bite, or swat when stopped from doing so. When inside carrier sat in back and when given food showed no interest.

11/07/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – AVERAGE

Dexter is described as curious, outgoing and affectionate. He lived in a home with a 10 year old child and was relaxed with the child. He also interacted with a pit-bull in the owner’s home but would hiss at the dog when it was near. Dexter was relaxed around the other cat. They would play together and sometimes groom each other. Reaction to assessor: Dexter looks neutral in his cage when approached by the assessor. Reaction to door opening: Dexter remains crouched position, alert with eyes wide open. Reaction to touch: Dexter began to lip lick in place then stands with tail up to head-butt the assessor’s hand and appreciates petting on the head and body. Reaction to Being Picked up: He becomes antsy then jumps back into his cage. Placement determination: Average Dexter interacts with the observer, appreciates attention, is easy to handle and tolerates all petting. This cat is showing behavior appropriate for new or experienced cat parents.
