***SAFE 12/19/15*** SECOND CHANCE FOR COCO! MAKE IT COUNT!! COCO WAS ABANDONED, AND KNOWS IT! NEUTERED MALE COCO has had a rough time. We don’t know what’s happened to him, but whatever it was has frightened him to death—and tomorrow the ACC will finish him off—they are not known for their patience with traumatized cats and COCO is one. He is already neutered and was okay when first bought in. But some cats have a terrible fear of feeling cornered in a cage, and COCO is one of those cats. Four years old, and ‘rescue only’ he very well may die without your offer to foster him! PLEASE SAVE COCO NOW Let him show you who he really is, when he’s not cornered and treated like a wild animal. WORK WITH A NEW HOPE RESCUE TO SAVE COCO TONIGHT!

Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Coco was brought in as a stray, so we cannot speak to his behavior in his previous home. He was displaying distance-increasing behavior upon intake and during his initial medical exam. He was growling, striking, and trying to bite. Reaction to Assessor: Coco was calm and relaxed by the front, but hisses randomly. Reaction when softly spoken to: Coco looks at the assessor and then growls. Reaction to cage door opening: Coco becomes stiff and alert, stepping away from the front. Reaction to touch: Coco becomes cautious and tense. He focuses on the assessor’s hand, growls, and lifts his paw up to prepare to swat. He does not allow petting and he lip licks and blinks throughout the interaction. Behavior Determination: New Hope Only Coco is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, is extremely fearful in the shelter environment, and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
