SMOKEY – A1042483
8-8-2015 Brooklyn Rescue: Happy Homes Please honor your pledges: http://www.happyhomesinc.org/
**SAFE 08/08/15 ** SWEET SMOKEY NEEDS RESCUE ANGEL! SMOKEY (who was already at risk in mid-July) is back on the list tonight. She is a pretty, spayed lady whose former owner has been hospitalized. This prompted someone else to care for SMOKEY, and ultimately, that person decided to bring her to the ACC rather than to continue caring for her. SMOKEY does not understand why her quiet routine has been broken up, and was having some litter box accidents….. unfortunately, she has now caught the shelter cold and will be “cured” of it by lethal injection. Please don’t let this GOOD girl be the victim of circumstances beyond her control! Her EXPERIENCE rating means that Smokey can be reserved on the ACC website tonight, or you can work with a foster if you need transportation help and live within a few hours of NYC. Please work hard to save SMOKEY tonight!

07/09/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Reaction to Assessor: Smokey was calm, relaxed, and friendly upon approach. When softly spoken to, she meows softly and comes to the front. Reaction to cage door opening: Smokey remains soft and relaxed. Reaction to touch: Smokey remains in place for petting, leans on the assessor’s hand, and begins to purr. Reaction to being picked up: Smokey meows and hisses when picked up, but remains soft and allows handling. She may hiss after putting her down, but allows petting and continues to solicit attention. As per previous owner’s relative, Smokey is an indoor cat who has a low activity level. She can be confident, assertive, and independent. Smokey has lived with other cats and has been tolerant and respectful of the cats she has been socialized with. The owner has mentioned one concern: Smokey has begun to urinate and defecate throughout the house a few times a week. They believe Smokey may be feeling stressed and suffering anxiety from being separated from her owner, this displaying this behavior. Smokey will also struggle when she is being placed in a carrier and is held for too long a period of time. Smokey will become defensive as a means of showing her discomfort with certain situations. Behavior Determination: Experience Smokey interacts with the observer, appreciates attention, is easy to handle and tolerates all petting. She may have some behavioral issues that will need to be addressed in the home. We advise any potential adopter to be prepared for this behavior, and prepared to manage it if it appears in a future home. Methods of managing and attempting to modify this behavior can be discussed with the Adoption Counselors. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.
