SMOKESTER – A1044885
7-25-2015 Manhattan
***GONE 07/25/15***BETRAYED HOUSEPET NEEDS NEW FRIEND! Smokester is a four year old grey and white handsome fella who desperately needs us to advocate for him tonight. He came into the shelter on 7/21 with his bonded feline friend, Prettylolo after living his entire life with his former owner and being purchased at a petstore as a kitten. Smokester was surrendered when his owner decided to move and not take him along. Neither he nor his housemate was fixed and it’s suspected that Prettylolo is pregnant. Smokester is described as playful, affectionate and talkative by his former owner but naturally super stressed at the shelter. This poor boy was let down by people, especially the person whom he trusted most. He has been slapped with a NH rating and unless we move him to safe haven tonight, he will become another sad ACC stat when tomorrow afternoon rolls around. Smokester should return to his normal affectionate self once he feels safe and sound. Please offer him a new leash on life and contact a NH partner to rescue. Transportation is available if you live within a few hours of NYC. Let’s show this great guy some love and fix the betrayal perpetrated against him. Won’t you please be Smokester’s rescue angel?

07/24/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Smokester lived previously with adults, with whom he played somewhat rough. He was affectionate toward a housemate cat. He has not lived with children, but does have a history of scratching a child once; we have no further details about this incident. Smokester is described as “affectionate, playful, and talkative.” Smokester was social and tolerant during intake, though he appears to be acclimating poorly to the shelter environment, tense and hissing during his initial medical examination. He is fearful and hesitant to interact during his behavior evaluation. Reaction to assessor: Smokester is in the middle of the cage, tense, and hisses and growls with dilated pupils when approached. Reaction to cage door opening: As the assessor reaches toward the cage door, Smokester charges the front of the cage. The interaction is ended at this point. Placement determination: New Hope Only Smokester is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to scratch and does not currently tolerate petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
