09/15/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
As per previous owner, Sheba is mellow, independent, and quiet with a low activity level. Her owner says she has not lived with any children or other cats. With the Shepherd Chow mix she lived with, Sheba’s owner says she was very affectionate and they would often cuddle together. Her owner says Sheba is kept indoors only, and has not been using the litter-box and has accidents about 2-3 times per day. In the shelter, Sheba has been shown to eliminate both inside and outside of her litter box. Sheba’s owner says there have been no past incidents of Sheba biting anyone or another animal. During baths Sheba is said to hiss and swat to get away, and is said to be unbothered with getting nails trimmed. Sheba’s owner reports that Sheba enjoys being brushed, and struggles when being placed in the carrier. Reaction to assessor: Sheba does not come to the front, but looks at the assessor, and is calm, relaxed and friendly. Reaction when softly spoken to: Sheba comes to the front of the cage – soliciting attention and rubbing against the bars. Reaction to cage door opening: Sheba remains soft and relaxed, and tries to climb on to the assessor’s lap. Reaction to touch: Sheba solicits petting and attention, head butting the assessor’s hand and arching her back into the stroke. Reaction to being picked up: Sheba begins purring and curls up on the assessor’s lap. Sheba’s previous owner reports that she was eliminating outside the litter box about 2-3 times a day and it has been occuring for 3 years. She was seen by a veterinarian and has no known medical issues. We are unaware of what modifications steps were taken to try and address this behavior in the home. The previous owner reports trying everything to change this behavior, but the inappropriate elimination behavior has continued. We cannot be sure what the trigger may have been or if this behavior may continue in a future home, but she has been observed to urinate in AND outside her litter box during her stay in the care center. Behavior Determination: Experience Sheba interacts with the Assessor, solicits attention, is easy to handle and tolerates all petting. She remains social and is easy to handle with her caretakers but due to her litter box issues, we advise potential adopters to be aware that this behavior may continue in a home environment, and that they be comfortable with management and modification techniques for this behavioral challenge.
