5-31-2015 Brooklyn Rescue: ***SAFE*** Pulled by Staten Island Hope. Donation website: http://www.statenislandhoperescue.org/ Please honor your pledges:
*SAFE* 05/31/15- Ruby was surrendered to BACC due to allergies. Her owners tried to rehome her with no success because “everyone thought Ruby was ugly”! This must have really hurt Ruby’s feelings because although her former family noted that she was affectionate and playful in her home, Ruby has been tense and reserved since being surrendered, and has not adjusted so well to life in the shelter. She is uncomfortable in her new environment, and could really use a calm home where she can relax! Despite what those other people said about her, I think Ruby is gorgeous! She has a pretty tortie coat and a round little face. Ruby will likely need some time to get used to her new family, but with some love and patience, I’m sure she’ll be splashing around in the sink in no time! Please pull Ruby from BACC today!
A staff member writes: Ruby says hello with an adorable baby meow when I go into her cubby to greet her, but she keeps her head just out of arms reach, only allowing me to give her some butt scratches. Ruby is gorgeous but isn’t one to flaunt it. She has a very “whatever” attitude and keeps to herself. She is also unfazed by my silly talk, blankly staring at me like a teenager who is just so over her mom’s embarrassing antics. I like this about her. She’s cool. So if you want to join the cool crowd, come down and adopt Ruby. Just make sure you have your Pink Lady jacket ready to go.

Update: 5/05
Ruby is showing conflicted behavior in the adoptions room, soliciting attention by rubbing on the bars but hissing when a hand is extended. While resting in her cubby an assessor approached and attempted to interact. Ruby looked at the assessor with soft eyes but remained toward the back of her cubby. She sniffed toward the assessor’s extended hand but did not approach. She hissed once after the assessor withdrew her hand. She slow blinked at the assessor but showed no interest in interacting or in receiving attention through several more hand extensions. Ruby’s owner profile describes an affectionate and vocal pet, but Ruby does not appear to be acclimating well to the kennel environment or to her new caretakers.
Evaluation: 4/24
Owner Profile: Ruby was bought into the care center because her previous owner was allergic to her. Ruby lived with adults and teenagers so her behavior towards children is unknown. Ruby lived with another cat. They got along well. Ruby has never been around dogs so her behavior towards them is unknown. Ruby activity level is to a medium, she likes to play with balls and strings. Ruby is an indoor cat and litter box trained.
Notes: At the time of the assessment she was displaying fearful behavior; does not seek attention from the assessor and becomes alert when the kennel was open. Retreats as I started to get closer but after a steady low approach using soft voices she relaxed a little and I was able to pet her and interact with her in a limited way. I was also able to pick her up and although she was tense no fractious behavior was display. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents.

When spoken quietly: Stayed in cat den (2)
