09/26/2015 PET PROFILE MEMO
09/26/15 13:57 BASIC INFO Penelope’s finder found her in a dirty basement almost 2 months ago when she was about 1 month old. She was with two other kittens who had already passed away and was severely flea infested. Her finder rid her of fleas and had her spayed. SOCIALIZATION Penelope avoids people, including her finder. She hisses when anyone tries to touch her. She hasn’t bit/scratched anyone. FOR A NEW FAMILY TO KNOW Penelope’s finder describes her as shy and independent. She lived inside, used her litterbox, and ate dry and wet food. INTAKE Penelope slowly walked out of her box into her kennel. She retreated to the back. She watched us when we took her picture in her kennel and hissed if we approached/reached towards her. We had scanned her in her box (+).

Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Penelope was found as a 1-month old kitten and stayed with the finder for 2 months. She avoided people in the home, including the finder, and would hiss when touched, though she did not bite or scratch. She is described as “shy and independent.” She has been interactive since arriving at the care center, soliciting attention but seems to lack social skills with her human handlers. Both during her initial medical examination and during her behavior evaluation she was curious and approached for interaction, but responded to handling with rough play (swatting and nipping), and repeatedly put teeth on skin. This does not appear to be designed to cause harm or increase distance, as she does not retreat after swatting or biting, but she does not appear comfortable with the interaction either – pupils are dilated, body tense, and she does seem to be searching for an escape during the interaction (though she did not flee). Penelope appears to be poorly socialized and has not learned appropriate behavior toward humans. After repeated nips Penelope did bite the assessor’s hand, leaving marks but not breaking skin. Due to this as well as her full known history, we recommend placement with a New Hope partner who can work so socialize Penelope, help her feel comfortable with human interaction and learn appropriate play behavior. Reaction to assessor: Penelope is sitting at the front of her cage, body neutral. Reaction to cage door opening: Penelope approaches the door. Reaction to touch: As described above, Penelope interacts roughly and with a tense body, escalating to a bite that does not break skin but does leave marks. Placement determination: New Hope Only Penelope is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and may require further investigation before placement in a home. She has tried to swat and bite, and tolerates only minimal petting and handling. She has a known history of behavioral issues that need to be addressed. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time
