He has been having issues going outside of his litter box since living with his owner. SOCIAL LIFE & PERSONALITY Oscar is described as affectionate and playful. He lived in a home with three adults with another male cat. He did not interact with children in the home, so the owner was unsure how he behaved around children. He was an indoor cat that was walked 1x a day outside on a harness leash. BEHAVIOR Oscar was accustomed to grooming himself. He was provided two litter boxes in hopes that he would use one of them. Oscar would prefer to use the hooded litter box however he would often go outside his litter box. He had daily accidents on the couch, hallway kitchen floor and other places in the home. His owner stated that they didn’t think there was anything medically wrong with him and assumed he needed time to adjust to the home. When Oscar was walked outside, his owner stated he walked well and would attempt to run if a stranger approached him. He would relieve himself outside. FOR A NEW FAMILY TO KNOW Oscar likes to play with wand toys and paw at balls. He likes to scratch on his carpeted scratching post. 10/11/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Oscar’s previous owner states that he has lived in a home with three adults and another male cat. His behavior around children is unknown. He allowed petting and enjoyed being carried by the adults. He was also affectionate with the other cat and they would groom each other and chase each other around the home. He was kept indoors, but would be walked outside once a day on a harness leash. Reaction to assessor: Oscar was calm and relaxed upon approach. Reaction when softly spoken to: Oscar comes to the front and attempts to sniff the assessor. Reaction to cage door opening: Oscar rushes to the opening and attempts to explore. Reaction to touch: Oscar head-butts and seems to appreciate all petting, but he stress meows and growls throughout the interaction. He allows all petting, but continuously attempts to exit the cage. The owner says Oscar uses a hooded litter box, but would often go outside his litter box for the month and a half they had him for. He has daily accidents on the couch and on other places in the home. They do not know if there was anything medically wrong with him and assumed he just needed to adjust to the home. He did, however, eliminate outside when the owner walked him out with a leash. We are unaware of what, if any, modifications steps were taken to try and address this behavior in the home, so we cannot be sure what the trigger may have been or if this behavior may continue in a future home. However, we recommend that potential adopters be comfortable with management and modification techniques for elimination outside the litter box should this behavior continue in a home environment. Behavior Determination: Experience Oscar tolerates attention and petting but may be fearful or stressed in the shelter. He may need time to warm up to his new home. We recommend that this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. Due to the behaviors seen in the care center, we recommend this cat go to a home with experienced cat parents. Any future home with young children should conduct a thorough interaction.
