GINGER – A1045165

**GONE 08/05/15** NEW HOPE RESCUE NEEDED TO PROVIDE FAIRYTALE ENDING FOR GINGER! Once upon a time, there was a sweet tiny kitten who was purchased from a pet store. He lived with a 12-year-old girl who treated him badly and the adults in the house let him get away with scratching—maybe because they knew he needed to defend himself from their kiddo? One day, they woke up and realized he was not a tiny kitten anymore, so they invented the “NO TIME” excuse and brought him to the horrible kill shelter. This story can still have a happy ending for GINGER, who is only a 13-month-old kitten, if a New Hope rescue group steps up for him tonight!

07/23/2015 PET PROFILE MEMO
07/23/15 17:30 BASIC INFO Ginger’s family got him from a pet store about 1 year ago when he was 3 months old. They surrendered him due to lack of time. SOCIALIZATION Ginger is friendly and outgoing with strangers. He lived with a 12 year old. She grabbed and poked him relentlessly in attempt to play. Ginger fled and hid and she followed him into hiding places. After that, he hissed and then scratched and bit her. He pawed and nibbled at his adult owner’s ankles when she sang and when she was in the kitchen (until he fed her). He didn’t vocalize at the adult and she thinks he may have been playing and begging, scratching her accidentally. All of his scratches and bites have caused only minor scratch marks, sometimes breaking skin but never requiring medical care. BEHAVIOR Ginger scratches a chair but didn’t have a scratching post. He enjoys being picked up and held. He doesn’t mind being bathed, brushed, put in a carrier, or woken up. FOR A NEW FAMILY TO KNOW Ginger’s family describes him as friendly, affectionate, playful, assertive, quiet, and medium energy. He likes to sit in the window. He follows his owner and sits on her shoulder. He played with stuffed toys and wand toys. He lived inside and slept with his owner. He massaged her head while she sleeps. He ate dry and wet cat food and enjoyed salad and chicken as a treat. He’s littertrained and used his hooded litterbox with clay litter and didn’t have accidents. INTAKE Ginger had a soft body while I pet, scanned (-), collared, picked up, and put him in a kennel. He was a little tense on the table while I positioned him for pictures. He was easy to handle and didn’t resist, retreat, or vocalize.

08/02/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – NH ONLY
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Reaction to assessor: Ginger was at the front, calm and relaxed. He chirps and reaches out with his paws when softly spoken to. Reaction to cage door opening: Ginger remains soft and relaxed. Reaction to touch: Ginger head-butts, but becomes agitated quickly and becomes stiff. He focuses on the assessor’s hand, hisses, grabs it with both front paws and nips. He lets go after a little while and starts to grumble. As per previous owner, Ginger is friendly and outgoing around strangers. He lived with a 12 year old who grabbed and piked him relentlessly in attempt to play. He fled and hid, but she would follow him into his hiding places, causing him to become defensive. He may paw and nibble on feet, but all his scratches and nips caused minor scratch marks. Ginger’s family describes him as friendly, affectionate, playful, assertive, and quiet with a medium energy level. Behavior Determination: New Hope Only Ginger is displaying behaviors that preclude placement in the adoptions room and/or may require further investigation before placement in a home. He has tried to swat, bite, and does not currently tolerate all petting or handling. The behavior department feels that placement with a New Hope Partner is the best option at this time.
