***SAFE 11/22/15*** CASSIUS has been abandoned! It doesn’t say that,but to leave a 10 year old,DIABETIC cat that has lived with them the past 9 years,in a HIGH KILL SHELTER is straight out ABANDONED! Poor CASSIUS isn’t showing his sadness though, because HES charming the assessor and earned a BEGINNER rating. He’s already NEUTERED and ready to go! PLEASE, have a heart, offer to FOSTER or ADOPT this sweet guy….he needs to know that not everyone abandoned their pet!

11/18/15 15:14 BASIC INFO Cassius is a 10 year old neutered cat. His owner adopted him from a rescue group 9 years ago. She surrendered him because she’s moving from her home to travel. Cassius was diagnosed with diabetes in May 2015 and has not been treated with insulin or other medication. SOCIALIZATION Cassius is friendly/outgoing with strangers. He’s relaxed, affectionate, and tolerant with children. He plays exuberantly with people. He used to live with a male cat and was relaxed, affectionate, and played exuberantly with him. Cassius has never bit or scratched anyone. BEHAVIOR Cassius is nervous in the car. He enjoys being brushed, picked up, and held. He doesn’t mind being cleaned with pet wipes or woken up. He’s nervous when put in a carrier. FOR A NEW FAMILY TO KNOW Cassius’s family describes him as friendly, affectionate, playful, mellow, confident, talkative, and low energy. He follows his owner, taps her gently to ask for attention, and likes to sit in her lap. He likes to go in the shower and play in the water and with strings. He lived inside. His owner cooked chicken, fish, and beef for him. She occasionally gave him dry Blue Buffalo cat food. Cassius is littertrained, used a hooded litterbox with clumping litter, and didn’t have accidents. He scratched a vertical carpeted scratching post in addition to a chair designated to him for scratching. INTAKE Cassius was a little tense while we pet him and scanned him (-) and while he walked out of his carrier. He walked around the counter and tolerated being collared, pet, positioned for pictures, picked up, and put in a kennel. He didn’t resist, retreat, or vocalize.

Cassius’ former owner stated he is friendly/outgoing with strangers. He’s relaxed, affectionate, and tolerant with children. He plays exuberantly with people. He used to live with a male cat and was relaxed, affectionate, and played exuberantly with him. Also, describes him as friendly, affectionate, playful, mellow, confident, talkative, and low energy. Reaction to assessor: Cassius immediately comes soliciting at the front of the cage. Reaction to door opening: Cassius remains standing at the front of the cage, relaxed body posture, soliciting attention. Reaction to touch: Cassius head-butts the assessor’s hand and appreciates petting on the head and body. Reaction to Being Picked up: Allows the pickup and remains calm. Placement determination: Beginner Cassius interacts with the Assessor, solicits attention, is easy to handle and tolerates all petting. This cat can go to a beginner home.

She cooked meat for his meals, and occasionally gave him cat food S: Watchful, tail tapping, gets impatient with exam and yowls O: BAR-H, MMs pink EENT: No discharge OU, nose. Mild discharge AU. Mild tartar and gingivitis. PLNs: Mandibular LNs mildly enlarged. H/L: NSR, NMA. Eupnic, quiet lung sounds. Abd: Soft, no masses palpated M/S/I: No orthopedic injuries observed. No skin lesions noted. UG: Male neutered A: Externally healthy older male neutered cat with an owner-reported history of diabetes and significant weight loss in the last 6 months Short-term prognosis: Fair P: This patient needs confirmation of diabetes (bloodwork) and definitive treatment, starting with diet change and possibly progressing to insulin injections if needed. Ideally this patient should go to a New Hope partner as soon as possible, to minimize the time spent sitting in a stressful environment without treatment. 1088
