Cellphone conversation overheard by a volunteer:
“Oh, hi, this is Virginia. I’m calling from the Animal Care Center. I was just wondering if you might have a little corner of your couch where I could cuddle up? I don’t have alot of stuff. I just need a corner somewhere to stash my litterbox, and some food that comes in a can or a bag. Uh, huh. Yeah, well, actually, it would, it would be for a while, kind of like forever, but I know you will like me, you really will. I’m just ten months old, just a little girl actually. And I’m told I’m very pretty. I have a muted, pastel calico coat. Yes! I know, it does sound pretty, I mean it is pretty. Sort of like an impressionist painting. And I am super friendly and gentle, and I’m easy to pick up and hold, if you want to. Uh, huh, I know, it’s a commitment, but I promise I will do everything to make your whole family so happy. And they say having a pet lowers blood pressure, though I don’t know what that means. Oh, and I forgot, I would like to bring a few toys, if that’s ok? Nothing expensive or fancy. Just something to play with while you’re away so I won’t miss you too much. Uh huh, uh huh, so you’ll think about it? That’s great. And I am here at the ACC all day every day, so you can come meet me. Yes, me too, I can’t wait! Hope to see you soon!”

BEHAVIOR—Beginner Home
Reaction to assessor: Virginia was resting in her cage upon approach. She wakes up, stretches, and starts to knead when softly spoken to.
Reaction to cage door opening: Virginia remains soft and relaxed.
Reaction to touch: Virginia remains in place for petting, head-butts, and comes to the front. She begins to purr and rubs her cheeks against the assessor’s hand. When the assessor stops, she meows to solicit more attention.
Reaction to being picked up: Virginia remains soft and allows handling.
Behavior Determination: Beginner
Virginia interacts with the Assessor, solicits attention, is easy to handle and tolerates all petting. This cat can go to a beginner home.
