**SAFE 11/18/15** Some people just need to leave well enough ALONE! Poor HAZELNUT was caught in a trap,set by the Finder and brought to the Care Center. He made things oh so much worse for this scared and confused 2 year old. She was dirty and wanted no part of being handled and because of her frightened nature she’s been branded with a RESCUE ONLY rating! You can help! Offer to FOSTER or ADOPT and contact a NEW HOPE RESCUE! The Finder made a mistake… But it’s how we respond to them that create the biggest differences!

I came in the shelter as a STRAY on 11/13/2015 from NY 10307, owner surrender reason stated was STRAY.

11/13/15 19:49 Animal’s appearance – Cat appeared slightly dirty but appeared to be of healthy weight. Animal’s demeanor with you – There was no handling of cat. Cat was transferred directly from trap to carrier. Finder stated that he was aware that there was a stray cat living in his backyard so he set a trap and this cat was what was caught in finder’s trap.

Hazelnut came to the shelter as a stray, so we don’t have any behavioral history or tendencies in a home environment. Upon intake, Hazelnut was not handled. Reaction to assessor: Hazelnut is lying in the back of her cage, flat. Reaction when softly spoken to: Hazelnut looks at the assessor with wide eyes, ears flat. Reaction to cage door opening: Hazelnut remains motionless. Reaction to touch: Hazelnut is still at first, but strikes when petting is attempted. Placement Determination: New Hope Only Hazelnut does not approach the assessor, appears fearful, and does not allow handling. Hazelnut is exhibiting behavior suited to rescue partners.
