08/24/2015 BEHAVIOR EVALUATION – EXPERIENCE
Exam Type BEHAVIOR
Reaction to Assessor: Charlie slowly comes to the front upon approach. He head-butts the cage door when softly spoken to, but grumbles a little and his tail twitches. Reaction to cage door opening: Charlie remains relaxed, but starts to growl. Reaction to touch: Charlie head-butts and solicits attention, but continues to growl during the interaction. After some petting, he nips gently on the assessor’s hand. As per previous owner, Charlie has lived with two adults and 2 children. He was relaxed and affectionate towards everyone in the home. He has also lived with another cat and is respectful and tolerant with the other cat. He has been kept indoors and is described as playful, friendly, and affectionate with a low activity level. The previous owners report that he was eliminating outside the litter box for years and eliminates on the bed and sofa. They have tried using different types of litter boxes and he doesn’t share them with another cat, but the inappropriate elimination behavior has continued. We advise potential adopters to be aware that this behavior may continue in a home environment, and that they be comfortable with management and modification techniques for this behavioral challenge. Behavior Determination: Experience Initially Charlie solicits petting and attention, but he begins to growl and nips during the interaction. This may be a sign of petting-induced aggression, where repeated physical contact results in discomfort for the cat, or it may be a sign of overstimulation. As a result of this observed behavior we recommend adopters who are familiar with signs of behavioral arousal and agitation in cats, so that interactions can be ended before Charlie becomes reactive. Treats should be used to reward appropriate responses to physical attention. Any future home with children should conduct a thorough interaction before adopting.
